Helix Midnight Luxe mattress review - data-backed test results (2)

For this Helix Midnight Luxe review, we ran the mattress through a series of rigorous hands-on performance tests.

What did the data show?

Well for one, it’s great at relieving back pain. You can thank the beefed up support and comfort layers (compared to the Core model) for that.

The scores for motion isolation, edge support, pressure relief and comfort were all perfect or nearly perfect. This really is a solid mattress.

But (and there’s always a but), one area where it fell short was when it came to cooling. We weren’t too impressed with the much-touted cooling capabilities of this mattress and think that hot sleepers could find something a little bit better. It’s not bad (and certainly not a dealbreaker), just not great.

We also found that the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress is best suited for side sleepers.

Why?

The answer lies in its firmness level.

Firmness test

Helix Midnight Luxe mattress review - data-backed test results (3)

The Helix Midnight Luxe mattress sits on a – 6 on the mattress firmness scale making it a medium-firm mattress.

On principle, this should mean that it should be suitable for all sleeping positions and body types but due to its plush pillow top surface, the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress may not be able to provide quite enough lumbar support for back and stomach sleepers, especially those who weigh well over 250 lbs.

Side sleepers, on the other hand, are able to reap the full benefits of the Helix Midnight Luxe’s zoned support as well as its plush, pressure relieving pillow top layer.

Side sleepers need a mattress that’s soft enough to keep pressure of their main pressure points but firm enough that it keeps their spinal alignment in check. The Midnight Luxe sits right in that sweet spot.

But that’s not to say that stomach and back sleepers should swear off the Helix Midnight Luxe for good.

If you fall within the average weight range you should be able to sleep very comfortably on this mattress.

Cooling test

We rate the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress a 6 out of 10 when it comes to temperature regulation.

You would think that due to its sizeable coil unit combined with its Tencel/GlacioTex cover, the Helix Midnight would perform exceptionally well when it comes to lessening heat retention but alas, its multiple memory foam layers – although infused with active cooling materials such as copper gel – still retained a significant amount of heat.

That’s not to say that the Helix Midnight mattress performed poorly, it’s just that we expected something a little bit more especially since you get the option to choose between a mattress cover that’s made of Tencel or Helix’s own GlacioTex fabric which are both breathable and moisture-wicking.

It just didn’t live up to our standards and if you’re the type of sleeper who tends to sleep exceptionally hot, you might want to look elsewhere.

Comfort test

We rate the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress an 8.5 out of 10 for comfort.

Not surprising since memory foam is well, memory foam and we all know that in all its forms, memory foam offers superb cushioning and pressure relief.

The Helix Midnight Luxe mattress is no different.

The proprietary memory foam layers in the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress offered a plush, swaddled in yet responsive feel that combines the best bits of both a memory foam mattress and a hybrid mattress.

Helix Midnight Luxe mattress review - data-backed test results (4)

Helix mattresses in general are pretty good at offering pressure relief but again, the multiple foam layers in the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress are working overtime in providing both cushioning support and pressure relief making for a very comfortable sleeping experience, especially if you are a side sleeper.

We also found the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress to be a very good mattress for those who suffer from chronic pain such as fibromyalgia.

Motion transfer test

We rate the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress a 10 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

You read that right.

10 out of 10.

While all-foam mattresses reign supreme when it comes to deadening any cross-mattress movement, the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress is giving them a run for their money which is kinda surprising especially for hybrid mattresses.

But thanks to its multiple foam layers, we barely (almost none honestly) felt any motion transfer when we tried the Midnight Luxe out with a partner which makes it an excellent mattress for those who share a bed.

Unless your partner is literally jumping on the bed, you will not feel any movement on the mattress whatsoever.

Edge support test

We rate the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress a 9 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

Helix Midnight Luxe mattress review - data-backed test results (5)

There are up to a 1000 individually wrapped coils that are reinforced on the edges and zoned in the middle.

Reinforced edges help provide extra support which allows you to maximize the use of the entire mattress surface.

We found the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress to have outstanding edge support no matter whether we were sitting or lying close to the edge of the bed.

Pressure relief test

Similar to the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress’ comfort rating, we rate it an 8.5 when it comes to pressure relief.

Comfort and pressure relief go hand in hand no matter the mattress type and it’s no different with the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress.

It’s easy to say that it’s comfortable to sleep on the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress and call it a day but it’s so much more than that.

Again, the multiple memory foam layers are doing all the heavy lifting here and with the addition of the plush pillow top gives the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress a distinctive plush and pressure relieving feel that takes off all the pressure from the main pressure points.

Construction

Imagine lying on a Tempur-Pedic bed, only it’s more responsive – that’s how it feels sleeping on the Helix Midnight Luxe.

There are 6 layers to the Helix Midnight mattress, including the mattress cover.

You get to choose between either a Tencel cover or Helix Sleep’s very own GlacioTex cooling cover. Both are soft, breathable and moisture-wicking.

The GlacioTex cover is slightly more cool to the touch but that’s the only difference.

Woven into the top cover is the premium quilted pillow top that mimics the feel of a high-end hotel mattress which is responsible for most of the plush and soft mattress feel.

Underneath the pillow top lies a layer of Helix’s own responsive foam which helps counteract sinkage of the memory foam layers.

Below that lies a layer of copper gel memory foam.

This layer provides that contouring and cradled-in feel that you would expect from traditional memory foam. Copper-gel infused memory foam is also known to be not as heat-retentive as true memory foam.

Below that lies another one of Helix Sleep’s proprietary foam – their Memory Plus foam.

A bit higher in density than regular memory foam, this layer helps provide extra support and stability for proper spinal alignment.

The coil unit in the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress is made up of up to a thousand recycled steel coils that are individually wrapped.

This layer offers zoned support which means you get enhanced support in areas you need it the most such as the lumbar region.

The base layer is made up of DuraDense foam which helps provide stability and durability and helps hold all the top layers together.

We experienced a tiny bit of that new mattress smell when we first unboxed the mattress but this dissipated within 48 hours.

Helix mattresses are also fiberglass-free.

Durability

Helix mattresses, especially the Helix Luxe models and the Helix Elite models, generally have had no complaints when it comes to the durability department.
