Problems with USB connection

Postby mateuszrealizator »

Hi. I have a problem that I cannot solve so I am writing to you because you are my last hope. Some time ago my church got a new computer for live streaming. We don't have cameras yet, but I am already mixing the audio that goes into OBS on the computer. This is where the problem starts. Previously, I mixed audio on an old laptop with 4GB of RAM and 3rd generation of i3 from Intel. Audio was coming from the x-usb interface and each x32 channel was assigned to a separate channel in the Reaper. The entire mixed signal was sent to the OBS via the rearoute. On this laptop it was almost 0 latency. And this is where the problem begins. When I applied the same setup on a new computer with 16GB of RAM, the RTX 3080 and i5 11th generation- same version of OBS, x-usb driver and Reaper as on old laptop and audio started crackling. At first I thought the problem was with the OBS or the Reaper. Later at home I heard the audio multitrack worship recorded in waves tracks live from new pc and there were crackles too. I tried to increase the buffer size in the x-usb driver but it did not solve my problem. I tried new and older versions of the x-usb driver but the problem was still the same. I have no idea why the audio on a computer with 16GB RAM and the 11th generation i5 is broken when on a laptop with 4GB RAM and the old i3 it runs without problems and with 0 latency. The only difference between a laptop and a pc is that the old laptop has windows 8 and much weaker components, and the new pc has windows 10 and powerful components. I have no idea how to fix it, but maybe you will find a solution Problems with USB connection (1).

Hi @mateuszrealizator , welcome to the forum. Check the USB port on the new laptop and make sure it is not a USB 3.0 or 3.1. The X32 USB is 2.0 and does not work well plugged into a USB 3.x port.

Hi. Thank you for reply. I think all USB ports in new pc are 3.0. Is it way to bypass this limitation?

Not that I know of. I just purchased a newer (used) laptop and made sure that it had at least one USB 2.0 port.

I checked back of pc. It has 2x USB 2.0 ports. But i realized that x-usb was plugged in to one od this USB 2.0 ports all the time. I tried second port and audio has same crackles. So unfortunately USB 2.0 isn't solution of my problem Problems with USB connection (4)

Are you over driving any of the inputs to the computer. Some of them will overload even when it looks like the levels aren't that hot. If you record a stereo out to the USB (thumb drive) on top of the X32 how does that sound?

Ok, at least that is ruled out. What version is the ASIO drivers? And what version is the Windows OS (11?). Have you tried the latest ASIO version (5.1.2)? Another option is to consider using a linux distro, such as Ubuntu, Mint, etc. I convinced a local church to install Ubuntu on a separate partition, since they were getting occasional garbled audio from their X32 Producer and that solved their issue (linux doesn't need additional audio drivers, like the Mac).

No. Gains are set correctly and on Reaper meters i see that signal is not clipping. I plugged in again x-usb to old laptop and everything is good. But on new pc even when x-usb is plugged to USB 2.0 there are crackles which are not caused by distortion. Stereo mix recorded on x32 USB input sounds good.

On new pc there is Windows 10. I wanted to install Ubuntu or other Linux distro but this pc must run propresenter too so there must be Windows. I don't remember what x-usb driver i use but probably the latest version. I tried older versions too but i don't remember if x-usb was plugged in to USB 2.0 or to USB 3.1. I will check different drivers version on Sunday because now service ended and i'm at home. But i want to thank you guys for your support Problems with USB connection (7)

My church has a similar setup. But they are using ProPresenter on a Mac and OBS on a Windows 10 computer (tried to convince them to use linux, but was unsuccessful). We are feeding the OBS computer using the line in (from X32 Aux Out 5/6), since we are using the USB with another laptop (for audio recording and preservice music).
