Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Welcome to Tuesday and quarterfinal #7 of this Champions Wildcard competition. Today’s players are Morgan Briles, Joe Velasco, and Robert Kaine. This game matches a 2-day champion in Morgan with a pair of 1-day champions in Joe and Robert. Morgan lost the same game that recent Second Chance advancee Jilana Cotter lost in, while Robert was -$7,000 on Daily Doubles in his initial games. This game could go in any number of different ways!
It should also be noted that the Writers Guild of America strike is officially over; the WGA has ratified the 3-year contract deal with the AMPTP. Jeopardy!‘s writers have been back at work since October 2, and their initial task is to significantly reduce (if not eliminate) the number of repeat clues being seen by the Champions Wildcard players beginning on November 9.
In further site news, there may be some site downtime overnight tonight due to server maintenance.

Canterbury is one of 16 regions in New Zealand, and one of seven located on the country’s South Island. At around 17,500 square miles, it’s also the country’s largest region in area, and with 655,000, it is the country’s second-most-populous (after Auckland). It gets its name from Canterbury, England, the famed city in Kent that serves as the location for Canterbury Cathedral, the cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury, the leader of the Church of England.

(Categories: Not So Recent Science; Nascar Geography; Composers & Their Kin; Heraldry; Moist Things; Go ____)

Morgan—buoyed by the “Daily Double shimmy”—picked up 15 correct responses in the Jeopardy Round, including the Daily Double, to jump out to a big lead!

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Morgan 7 correct 0 incorrect
Joe 4 correct 1 incorrect
Robert 3 correct 2 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Robert has a full-length LEGO tie and LEGO pocket square.
Joe had his original appearance air on the 17-year anniversary of a near-death figure skating accident.
Morgan really enjoyed meeting Katie Couric.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Morgan 15 correct 0 incorrect
Joe 7 correct 1 incorrect
Robert 4 correct 3 incorrect

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Nice Side Whiskers!; Brando; I Wrote That Line; Gas; Food; Lodging)

Joe and Robert both had much better Double Jeopardy rounds. They each found a Daily Double, and while Joe made a more conservative bet than I would have liked to see, it was enough for Morgan to not have a runaway going into Final.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Morgan 22 correct 1 incorrect
Joe 14 correct 2 incorrect
Robert 14 correct 6 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Morgan $18,900
Joe $10,200
Robert $8,600

Joe was the only player to come up with Canterbury; that makes him a semi-finalist (the second semi-finalist named Joe in this bracket!)

Tonight’s results:

Robert $8,600 – $1,400 = $7,200 (What is Lego?)
Joe $10,200 + $10,000 = $20,200 (What is Canterbury?) (Semi-Finalist)
Morgan $18,900 – $6,000 = $12,900 (What is Westminster?)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • It was refreshing to see an auto racing category not have any Triple Stumpers; I was also a big Morgan fan after she went 4/5 in the category!
  • On the flip side, I was disappointed by Morgan’s bet in Final Jeopardy; it was a bet that Keith Williams would refer to as a “Lazarus” bet, as it brings Robert “back from the dead”, as it were.
  • Today’s box score: October 10, 2023 Box Score.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Morgan $18,900 Joe $10,200 Robert $8,600)

Morgan: Standard cover bet over Joe is $1,501; whatever you do, don’t bet more than $1,699 to keep Robert locked out.(Actual bet: $6,000)

Joe: You can’t win unless you’re correct. You have to bet at least $7,200 here. (Actual bet: $10,000)

Robert: You basically need lots of unforced errors in front of you to have a chance of victory. Limit your bet to $5,599 for the best chance of second place. (Actual bet: $1,400)
